The Season Begins

All eyes will be on World Superbike champion James Toseland, as the MotoGP season kicks off in Qatar on Sunday, writes Suzi Perry

I've had one eyebrow raised slightly all winter. It's not a dabble with botox gone wrong, but down to hope and expectation being met by something of an element of genuine surprise.

Dare we dream that Toseland could be champion at the end of this year?

You see, like all British bike fans, I have been slavishly following the progress of a certain James Toseland (pictured), a very British rider, reigning World Superbike champion, who this year is making his debut in MotoGP. Since jumping on his Yamaha in Sepang for the first time last November, he has grown in stature and his form has become more impressive. Last week he completed testing for the first race in Qatar tomorrow and topped the time sheets almost until the end of the session, when he lost out by hundredths of a second to the reigning 250cc world champion Jorge Lorenzo, Valentino Rossi's new team-mate.
