The Shanghai grand prix circuit should suit Casey Stoner and his Ducati well tomorrow

The other day I had an encouraging conversation with a cabbie on my way back from Spitalfields Market. I had been involved in the launch of the Vectrix electric scooter and the driver quipped that I wouldn't be able to beat Casey Stoner on one of those. Well, let's be honest, I wouldn't be able to beat Casey Stoner on anything, but that isn't the point. The thing that impressed me was the choice of rider that the driver picked to talk about. Since he originally hailed from Italy, you'd have thought he would plump for the inimitable Valentino Rossi, but no, he chose the 21-year-old Aussie who is currently top of the championship table. The young Desmosedici pilot, in his first season with Ducati, has caught the eye of the public, and for good reason.

Of the first three races, he has won two, and convincingly so. In Qatar he was untouchable, simply dominating any straight piece of tarmac, and in Turkey a couple of weeks ago he led from afar. The flat-out speed will help him again this weekend as the paddock tackles round four, the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, tomorrow
