| Wolves v Portsmouth Published in the Express & Star, Monday 1st September 2003
I must admit that I am in a far better state of mind now than when I wrote last, after the Charlton game. The mid-week appearance at Manchester left a lot of so-called experts with egg on their faces and I thought we were extremely unlucky not to get a draw. The introduction of Alex Rae made a great difference but it was an outstanding team performance and there were certainly no faint hearts on Wednesday. The second home match arrived; a beautiful sunny day and what looked like a sell-out crowd made for a great atmosphere. The first half today must be the best 45 minutes the Wolves have played so far this season. There were spells when they bombarded Portsmouth but they couldnt seem to get that vital break in front of goal. The second half didnt quite have the tempo of the first but it proved to be a very entertaining 0-0 draw. There was a lot of commitment shown by our lads and it was a much better display than the previous Saturday. I know we havent exactly set the footballing world alight yet, but it is not only our first point but also our first clean sheet. That surely is very important after conceding nine goals in our first two games. Another factor is that in the last two games, we have faced both Van Nistelroy and Teddy Sheringham who are excellent strikers and neither of them managed to score. If you look at the Portsmouth result in isolation, it is probably disappointing as this match would be considered a six pointer and I can understand that. However, if you view this match in context with the other games so far, then it has to be a big step forward. As I understand that there are no premier league matches now for a couple of weeks due to international duties, hopefully this will give the Club time to work on their injured players and maybe a chance for the new signings to get more acquainted with the established guys. As the saying goes there are no easy matches in the Premiership but I am still very optimistic of our survival.
