Wolves v Fulham

No – it doesn’t have the same ring about it as Man United, Chelsea or Arsenal does it but Fulham at home was a massive fixture for us because of the unexpected defeat at Leeds.

On the positive side, Ince and Camara were back and available for selection and some of the senior players had enjoyed 11 days without a major competitive game giving time to ‘recharge their batteries’.

Once again it was a great crowd and the only reason the stadium wasn’t ‘a sell-out’ was due to Fulham not being able to dispose of their full ticket allocation.

Wolves started like the proverbial ‘house on fire’. Fulham didn’t know what had hit them and this was the ultimate ‘in your face’ football. In fact Wolves almost went a goal up after only six minutes: a back-heel from Kenny Miller put Alex Rae through but Van Der Sar made a smart save low on his right hand side. It was Wolves all the way with Rae and Ince driving them on from midfield. Then came the breakthrough! A move that involved both Rae and Clyde ended with Paul Ince steering a left foot shot into the far corner – we were on the way. At this stage, the Wolves were well on top and Fulham were finding it difficult to get out of their own half.

A great chance to double the lead fell to Kenny Miller on the half-hour. Cort cleverly chested the ball on and the Scotsman beat the offside trap but with only the goalkeeper to beat, he was too deliberate with his shot and the Fulham keeper saved at full stretch. It was five minutes from half-time before Fulham had a worthwhile shot and forced a smart save from Paul Jones.

When half time arrived, you felt that Wolves could and probably should have been more than one goal in front. However, within six minutes of the restart, this situation was rectified. With the Wolves players closing down the Fulham defence and harassing them into mistakes, the ball ended up with Carl Cort who calmly steered it pas Van Der Sar for his first goal since his £2 million transfer from Newcastle.

It was then that the game became end to end with Fulham desperately trying to get back into it. However, it was the Wolves captain who almost finished the game off with a blistering 71st minute drive that beat the goalkeeper but struck the underside of the bar and came out.

With less than 10 minutes to go, Miller was substituted for Ganea. In the 84th minute, Fulham scored with a goal from Malbranque. Suddenly from being a comfortable home victory, the game became frenetic. The crowd became visibly nervous and every decision in favour of the Wolves was greeted with a massive cheer. Our team held on and deservedly so.

The Molineux has become a theatre for the Wolves fans this season and no one can say they haven’t had full value for money. So then – forward and onward.
